Challenge

Breakdown or contamination in the distribution chain

Waterworks serves a core societal task in supplying potable water to the local population. It is a cornerstone of most societies today that you have access to clean water and a constant and secure supply for private and industrial use.

The key pain point for the utilities is to experience a breakdown or contamination in the distribution chain, which means a shutdown of the water supply or the risk of providing sub-standard water to users. Not delivering potable water is an operational breach that significantly distresses peoples’ lives and industries’ daily operations. Supplying contaminated water can be a dire health concern, which is why waterworks are under scrutiny from authorities and media to ensure clean water in their local regions.

Solution

Early detection rather than correcting water quality issues after they occur

Our technology is an entirely new proactive approach that allows for near real-time monitoring and early indications of possible contaminations or instabilities in the water quality.

Today, in case of pipe change or repair in the distribution system, it is standard to flush extensively to ensure safe bacterial levels. With BactiQuant, we have made it possible to detect much earlier when the bacteria levels are back to acceptable levels. Hence, there is the opportunity of flushing less, securing a significantly lower water consumption, thereby reducing the environmental footprint. Our Bactiquant technology enables a proactive and risk-based approach to water distribution and effectively manages resources to benefit customers and the environment.

How it works

How Bactiquant’s technology works

The BactiQuant technology is based on a patented method to measure the activity of a naturally occurring enzyme harbored by a broad range of bacteria in drinking water systems. The more enzyme activity, the more bacteria are present in the sample.

BactiQuant offers a unique combination of online and handheld technology that can be used to keep track of the water quality in the whole water chain, from raw water to the end user. The emphasis is on the early detection of possible contaminations or instabilities in the water quality rather than the correction after they have occurred.
